Of all of the pupils now embarking on the autumn term some are to be envied more than others. That is because they are going to start at a completely new senior high school, which they have been personally involved in designing. The resulting new building is something much bigger and more important than just a school. For Upplands Väsby, it means that the community has been given a completely new heart.
From a very competitive field, it was White who won the architectural competition for the new super hospital in the Danish town of Odense, which will be the biggest construction project ever for the region and a milestone within Danish healthcare.
Kristianstad Wetlands Visitor Centre, Naturum Vattenriket, has been shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival Award in the Display and Visitor centres category. World Architecture Festival takes place in Barcelona from November 2nd to 4 th.

White arkitekter has been shortlisted for the redesign of Hastings Pier, which suffered fire damage to 95% of its structure earlier this Autumn. Selected from 54 entries, White is the only non-British practice to reach the shortlist of six.
This week White is carrying out two strategic manager swaps to enable us to make the next move in our international initiatives, starting off with the dynamic Öresund Region. Alexandra Hagen will be the new Office Manager in Malmö, while Carl Bäckstrand is becoming White’s new International Manager.
“This set-up will allow us to move more people around for new international assignments,” says Anders Svensson, CEO at White.
At almost 160,000 m2, the new Masthusen area in Malmö is one of the country’s largest modern urban districts, right at the heart of the Western Harbour development. Environmentally too, Masthusen is going to be in a class of its own. Its owner, Diligentia, is setting the bar high and engaging White to assist in eco-classifying the district.
“This is to spearhead development in the fields of environment and sustainability for a long time to come,” says Anna Barosen of White, who is managing the comprehensive eco-classification work.
White and Tengbom – two of the country’s leading architectural practices – are forming a joint team to design the Nya Karolinska University Hospital in Solna. The hospital is being built and run by Swedish Hospital Partners, a consortium owned on a 50/50 basis by Skanska and the British infrastructure investment company Innisfree. The estimated completion date is autumn 2017.
At Uppsala Lighting Festival (30 oct – 28 nov) White and Butong has made a sculpture of concrete and light. We wanted to explore form and material containing light, rather than focusing on the lighting equipment.
Also this year we are nominated with two projects for World Architecture Festival in Barcelona in November. Youth Centre – The Satellite in Sollentuna and Southend Pier in Southend-On-Sea.
White’s success on the British market continues with a new project in inner city Manchester. Once again it is our extensive knowledge in sustainable architecture and urban planning that are in demand.
From 2011 Monica von Schmalensee will be the new CEO for White arkitekter AB, which is Scandinavia’s leading architectural practice and among the ten largest in Europe.

Teamed up with UK engineers Price & Myers, White has won the prestigious competition to redevelop Southend Pier situated on the English Channel and the mouth of the Thames.
A week ago the Sweden Green Building Council (SGBC) was established – a strong initiative from the industry – with the aim of jointly developing environmental and sustainable work within the construction and property market.
White is one of the three top-ranked architect offices that will be commissioned to create the Helsingborg of the future in collaboration with British Foster+Partners and Danish Schönherr Landscape. Together they will develop Helsingborg into one of the Nordic area’s most creative cities to live and work in.
As the only solely Swedish team, White is competing to design a new crematorium at Skogskyrkogården (the Woodland Cemetery) in Stockholm, which was inscribed on the Unesco world heritage list in 1994.
White has been chosen to take part in an exhibition at Maison du Danemark in Paris. The exhibition is organized by the French firm of architects Un souffle sur la ville and our project “Rede I vassen” (Nest in the reeds), a visitor centre in Kristianstad designed by the architect Fredrik Pettersson at White in Copenhagen will be presented.
White is currently battling it out in a tough international landscape architectural competition. The battle is for the assignment to design the environment surrounding the spectacular Imperial War Museum North in Manchester. Only five firms of architects remain from the original 54 competing for the coveted assignment.
White won the prestigious competition to design a new meeting place in the central of Malmö. In a though international competition our proposal won. The proposal is sprung from the vision of an open scene in the middle of the city.

It’s an impressive 12-strong shortlist of practices competing to build houses as part of the groundbreaking Scotswood Expo in Newcastle. And White is one of them.
The City of Stockholm has decided to build a new multifunctional arena which is due to open in 2012.
White has received Malmö’s city planning award 2008 for the Scylla quarter at Hjälmare Quay. According to the jury the building has “contributed to creating not only new sense of urbanity but also a new townscape with the transparent design towards the Inner Harbour area, which gives Hjälmare Quay a new face, daytime as well as at night, and is a worthy addition to the urbanisation of Malmö.”
Sweden’s first playground garden was opened in early June at Mariebergsskogen in Karlstad, designed by White following an architectural competition. We’ve questioned the traditional playground and designed a creative environment for both children and adults. 13,000 square meters of fun!

With the North Quay project, White has designed an ecological urban area for the city of Sundsvall. Our proposal for the project won against strong international competition. The aim is to create an exemplar of ecological development.
Vällingby Centrum has undergone major rejuvenation and also changed its name to Vällingby City. White was given overall architectural responsibility for one of the biggest municipal construction projects in recent times.
