Future Kiruna takes place at London Festival of Architecture

The urban transformation of Kiruna continues to draw international attention. A model of White Architects’ winning proposal ‘Kiruna 4-ever’ will be on display at Europe’s most prestigious architecture exhibition: London Festival of Architecture 2013.

London Festival of Architecture takes place every summer in London. The London Festival of Architecture is organised by four initiating partners: New London Architecture (NLA), The Architecture Foundation, Royal Institution of British Architects (RIBA) and the British Council.

– We are proud that we have the opportunity to showcase the proposals that we are going to implement together with the municipality and the residents of Kiruna. “Kiruna 4-ever” will be presented in London, shown among some of the world’s most interesting urban development projects, which is an honor, says Mikael Stenqvist, SVP architect at White.

The model of White and Ghilardi + Hellsten Architects’ proposal appears at The Bartlett School of Architecture in London June 7 to 27. British Council’s international exhibition Atlas of the Unbuilt World presents current projects from over 30 countries around the world – from social housing projects in Indonesia to “Kiruna 4-ever” in Sweden.

– I see that the future of Kiruna arouses great interest both in Sweden and abroad. In recent weeks, my colleagues and I talked with journalists from Germany, Norway, Holland and Italy. My feeling is that the interest in Kiruna transformation increasing, says Mikael Stenqvist, at White.

The project in Kiruna continues on schedule. The goal is that the first phase of the new town hall and surrounding neighborhoods will be completed in 2016. White is now working with Kiruna Municipality and Ghilardi + Hellsten Architects to a development plan for the first part. . One goal is that Kiruna will win the award for ‘This Year’s City Centre’ in 2017 when the first phase is finished.
